Introducing…

Swaranjali

An Indian Vocal Membership and space to learn singing, be introduced to the beauty and depth of North Indian Vocal music and be part of a community of like minded individuals.

I have been teaching for 18 years and after living in California (3 years) and teaching at the Ali Akbar College of Music, I moved back to London and started my own online group vocal classes. From live group online classes, personalised vocal coaching, some in person sessions in London and now retreats, I have developed the “INTUITIVE framework” that can help you on your Indian Vocal learning journey. The framework is made up of:

I - Introductory patterns: You’ll be able to explore and develop vocal patterns that create fluency and a strong ear so that you’ll never be lost for ideas when singing.

N - Nuances: Focus on teaching the subtle nuances of ragas (musical personalities) and talas (rhythmic cycles) to deepen your understanding of how these two things work together and help you sing expressively.

T - Traditional Repertoire: You will learn how to sing compositions based on both note names and lyrics, emphasising the importance of learning the framework of a Raga through compositions.

U - Understanding Lyrics: Emphasise the significance of understanding and interpreting the lyrics of compositions to convey their meaning effectively.

I - Integration of Tal: Explore the integration of rhythm cycles whilst singing to develop rhythm training and musicality.

T - Tonal Quality: Work on developing a rich and resonant tonal quality through vocal exercises and techniques specific to Indian classical singing.

I - Improving Stamina: Focus on building vocal stamina through regular practice sessions and exercises tailored to strengthen breath control.

V - Versatility: You will be encouraged to develop versatility by exploring different ragas, talas, and musical forms (Classical, thumri, bhajan) within the

North Indian Vocal tradition.

E - Emotional Expression: I will guide you in conveying emotion and mood through emphasising the importance of emotional connection in Indian music.

Meet Ranjana

I was born and raised in London and introduced to Indian Classical Music at the age of 4. I was lucky to be brought up in a musical family and have always had a passion and interest in singing.

Going to school and university where very few people knew about the kind of music I was listening and learning about at home, brought about a desire to share a form that brought so much beauty into my life.

After training with Indian Vocal teachers in the UK, I was fortunate to start learning with Maestro Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty in Kolkata, India. He is a leading light in the world of music, and I continue to learn and take in his vision of sharing this music with the world through performance and teaching.

My name happens to mean “Divine Entertainer” so I took this as one of many indications that performance and teaching was in my future! After working for the BBC and London Symphony Orchestra for 10 years I took a leap of faith and became a full time musician. For the last 13 years I have explored traditional music in addition to juxtaposing the beauty of sacred vocal music with contemporary instrumentation. I have taught and performed at places such as the Barbican, Southbank Centre, Commonwealth Games, Ali Akbar College of Music (California), Yale School of Music and several places across the UK.

With a continued experience of being both a student and performer, I recognise the need for community and support in our learning journeys. Studying Indian vocal music can be an isolating experience and through regular group teaching I decided to birth the idea of this membership. I look forward to sharing this journey with you!

“I love the way Ranjana teaches because it’s clear and concise but you can also sense the depth of her knowledge and practice. It’s been at the perfect level for me where it’s hard enough that I feel challenged but not presented in a way where I feel like it's going over my head. The exercises she gave us not only helped to warm up and become more settled into my voice but also helped focus my mind in a way that is so necessary for learning this kind of music. And the mantra we learned was absolutely beautiful!”

FAQ

How is this different to attending a term of classes?

Swaranjali is a container to support your learning. With that in mind you will have access to a listening room with selected recordings to support your learning and fun listening challenges. A space to send me music/voice related questions and receive individual feedback. Access to practise sessions and a host of workshops/events across the year that aren’t available with a one off term. A community page where you can connect with like minded individuals/learners.

I’m afraid of signing up for this and then not having the time or energy required to get the results.

The advantage of the membership is that you can access the classes in your own time if you can’t attend live and choose how much you want to be involved in the sessions.

I’m not sure I’m at the right level yet to do this

On signing up to the membership you will have access to a free workshop and you can always schedule a free call with me here to see if this is the right fit.
